In one sentence: the app works entirely without an account, and in that case nothing you do in it leaves your device. Creating an account, allowing notifications and accepting personalised ads are three separate, optional choices, each described below.
1 Who processes this data
The publisher of Neon Compass is the controller for the processing described here. For any question, access request or complaint: contact@neoncompass.app.
2 Without an account, nothing leaves your device
Browsing the map, dropping pins, ticking off what you have found, favouriting cheats and hiding a contributor are all stored on your device only, in the app's private storage. That data is not sent to us and we cannot read it. It is included in your device backup if you have one enabled, according to your iOS settings.
The app does download its maps, locations, cheats and news from our hosting. Like any request on the internet, that exposes your IP address to the server answering it; it carries no account identifier until you create an account.
3 The account, if you create one
An account lets you contribute to the map, vote, appear on the leaderboard and sync your pins. You can create one with Sign in with Apple, with Google, or with an email address and password.
| Data | Why |
|---|---|
| Account identifier and email address | To authenticate you. With Sign in with Apple, the address may be a relay address provided by Apple, which we only use to write to you. |
| Nickname | To name you publicly beside your contributions and on the leaderboard. |
| Points, level, rank | The contribution progress shown on your profile. |
| Pro status | To unlock the paid features. |
| Contributions | The proposed location, its category, its title, its position on the map and its language. A published contribution is public, with your nickname. |
| Votes and reports | To bring good proposals up and keep bad ones out. |
| Synced pins | Only with Pro, and only if you turn syncing on. Without it, your pins stay on the device. |
This data is hosted by Supabase on servers in the European Union.
4 Advertising
The app is free and funded by advertising served by Google AdMob: a banner, an occasional full-screen ad between two readings, and a rewarded video, which only plays if you choose it and temporarily unlocks Pro features. The map is deliberately kept free of the first two.
Personalised or not
Personalised advertising relies on your device's advertising identifier (IDFA). iOS only shares it with your explicit permission, requested in a system dialog. If you decline, the app keeps working exactly the same way and ads become non-personalised. You can change this at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
In Europe
A consent form provided by Google (User Messaging Platform) is shown on first launch and collects your GDPR choices. Where consent is required and has not been obtained, no ad is requested at all.
You can revisit those choices at any time from within the app, without writing to us: the gear icon at the top right, then Privacy → Ad Privacy Choices, which reopens the original form. That button only appears where this consent is required — elsewhere there would be no form to reopen.
Install measurement
The app declares Apple's SKAdNetwork identifiers. That mechanism lets an advertiser learn that one of its campaigns led to an install without identifying you: Apple aggregates and sends the result, and it contains no personal data.
5 Notifications
If you allow them, Apple assigns your device a technical token, which we keep along with the alert categories you chose so we can send you those alerts. The token tells us nothing about you. Declining notifications has no other consequence in the app.
6 The Pro purchase
Pro is a one-time purchase, with no subscription and no renewal. Purchases are handled by Apple — we never see your payment method or billing address. The app itself checks with Apple, on your device, that you own it.
7 Password checking
When you create an account with an email address, the app checks that your chosen password does not appear in publicly known data breaches, using the Have I Been Pwned service. Your password never leaves your device. Only the first five characters of its hash are sent, which matches roughly one password in a million: the service cannot tell which one you chose, nor even whether yours was among the answers it returned.
8 What the app does not do
- It never asks for your location: it uses no geolocation service at all, and its maps are our own drawings, not a map of the real world.
- It does not access your photos, camera, contacts or microphone.
- It embeds no analytics or behavioural statistics tooling — no analytics SDK, no third-party crash reporting, and no advertising tracker other than the AdMob setup described above.
- It does not sell or rent your data to anyone.
9 Who receives data
| Recipient | What it receives |
|---|---|
| Supabase | Hosting of the account and contributions. European Union. |
| Google (AdMob, User Messaging Platform) | What is needed to display ads and collect consent, including the advertising identifier if you allowed it. |
| Apple | Sign in with Apple authentication, notification delivery, purchase processing, SKAdNetwork attribution. |
| Have I Been Pwned | The first five characters of a password hash, at email sign-up only. |
10 Retention and deletion
Account data is kept for as long as the account exists. You can delete it yourself from the app's settings. That deletion is immediate and permanent:
- your profile, progress, votes, synced pins and notification tokens are deleted;
- your contributions, published or not, are deleted — spots already published disappear from the map, along with the votes and reports they had received.
Vote counts already aggregated on other people's proposals are not recalculated: they carry no information about who voted.
11 Your rights
You have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict, object to and port the data concerning you. Deleting your account, as described above, directly exercises the right to erasure. For anything else, write to contact@neoncompass.app. You may also lodge a complaint with your country's data protection authority — in France, the CNIL.
12 Children
The app is not directed at children and is not designed for an audience under 13. We do not knowingly collect data concerning them.
13 This website
This website sets no cookies and embeds no analytics. It only remembers, in your browser, the language you picked on it, or that you closed the banner suggesting one; that stays on your device and is never sent to us. It is hosted by GitHub Pages, which logs requests, including IP addresses, in order to run the service.
14 Changes
This policy may change along with the app. The date of the last update is shown at the top of this page, and significant changes will be announced in the app.
